Winter on Wadmalaw is a short brown season — a few frost mornings, the grass gone pale and dormant, the oaks holding their leaves as though nothing has changed. R.E.A.L. keeps working straight through it, cutting while lawns still want cutting and clearing the yards when they don't. Cold snaps out here arrive overnight and are gone by ten, and a mown lawn with its borders held reads like a promise that spring is only weeks off. By February the green starts pushing up underneath, and the yards tended in the quiet months come back ahead of the ones left alone. Simple work, done on time, which on an island this size counts for a great deal.
