Down at Newry the old mill village sits above the Little River, and by late October the hardwoods along it have gone rust and yellow and are letting go all at once. Leaf season is the long haul of a Seneca fall — you clear a yard on Friday and the wind off the foothills refills it by Monday. Wilkerson Lawncare keeps at it anyway: the last mows of the year taken low, leaves pulled off the turf and out of the bed corners, walks and drives cleared, the string trimmer squaring everything the deck rounded off. Cold mornings, frost on the tailgate, breath showing in the air — good weather for working. A lawn that comes through it clean stays that way until the grass wakes back up in March.
