January on this coast is less a winter than a long pause: grass gone straw-colored and dormant, fog off the Waccamaw burning away by nine, the live oaks stubbornly still in leaf. That is the stretch Topnotch Landscaping uses to catch a property up — leaf and debris cleanup, hedges cut back to shape, beds cleared and re-mulched, edges recut along the walks and drives. Come March the green returns in about a week, and the mowing and trimming pick straight back up, week after week through the long Myrtle Beach growing season. A yard tended in the quiet months is the one standing tall and even come June.
