Summer evenings out toward the North Carolina line last a long while, light going gold across the pastures with tractors still running in it. State Line Stump Grinding takes trees down around Landrum and then takes the last of them out of the ground: removal, trimming for whatever stays, and grinding the stump low enough that a bush hog can run a field without finding it. On a fence row a dead oak is a slow kind of problem — first a limb on the wire, then a section, then a whole afternoon of repair. Getting one out clean, trunk gone and ground level and the wire still tight, is the whole job. Landrum, Campobello, Gowensville, Inman and the farms pressed right up against the line are the working area.
