There is a week in Georgetown, usually April, when everything at once wants pine straw — beds gone thin over the winter, crepe myrtles just leafing out, borders asking for a hard edge. Mulch Monkey lives for that week and the ones on either side of it: mulch and pine straw installs, bed edging and weeding, mowing and trimming, with the cleanup hauled off at the end. Fresh straw does something no amount of mowing can, darkening the beds, sharpening every line, making the green read greener. The smell of it hangs around the yard for days after. That is a property finished top to bottom, not just cut.
