The soil here is coastal-plain sand, pale and quick to drain, and the centipede grass that loves it grows soft enough to walk on without shoes. Barefoot Yards keeps Florence lawns at that height — cut evenly, trimmed close to the walk, cleared of clippings so the blades stand back up by evening. Summer runs long in the Pee Dee, and a lawn mowed on a steady rhythm through June and July never gets away from anybody. The work is mowing, edging, trimming and hauling off what the mower leaves behind, and the reward is a yard a family actually uses. Cool grass under bare feet at the end of a hot day is a small thing, and it is the whole point.
