On Edisto the light arrives twice a day with the tide, sliding in over the spartina and catching in the moss those live oaks have spent a lifetime collecting. Rodela Tree Service moves gently under them — pruning with restraint, because a tree bent by years of salt wind has earned the shape it holds; trimming the limbs that have found a tin roof; taking down the ones a hard blow left cracked at the fork. After a storm crosses the ACE Basin the drives fill with pine tops and sweetgum, and clearing them is the first sign the island is turning back toward itself. The last pass is a rake and a look back: marsh view open, oaks still leaning over the drive, the yard reading as though the weather had gone somewhere else. Edisto Island, Edisto Beach and the road up toward Adams Run and Hollywood are all inside an easy morning.
