The interstate never really stops out past Dillon, but a yard being cut is a slower kind of sound, and it wins the morning. East Coast Mowers works the flat sandy ground of the Pee Dee, where centipede and bermuda take the July sun head-on and shade drops in long bars from pecan limbs. Mowing, edging, trimming along fence lines, hedges shaped back, and every walk and driveway blown clean before the truck pulls off. By two o'clock the sky goes white with heat and the yards sit even and quiet, their lines holding. Driving back through in the evening and seeing that edge still crisp is the whole reward.
