Earlewood sits on real hills, which is a rarity in this part of the state, and its backyards run downslope to fences with dogs behind them. Turf Dogs starts at daybreak in July, while the ground is still cool enough to kneel on and the neighborhoods north of Elmwood are quiet except for sprinklers. Mowing, trimming around the swing set and the shed, edging the drive, then a full sweep of the walks and patio before the gate latches again. The back of a property gets the same attention as the front — the burned-out corner under the downspout, the strip behind the garage that everybody forgets. Nobody sees a backyard from the street, which is exactly why it ought to look right.
