Everything on Lady's Island keeps time with the tide. Tideland Outdoors mows and maintains lawns on both sides of the Beaufort River, running weekly and biweekly routes — cutting, edging walks and drives, trimming close along bulkheads and dock paths, and clearing the trimmings before the water can carry them anywhere. Autumn is the good stretch out here: the humidity finally loosens, the spartina turns from green to gold, and grass slows into a cut that holds a whole week. Yards near the creeks live with salt air and a day or two of standing water after a king tide, which is its own kind of lawn to learn. Come evening, when the light goes long over the marsh and the bridge traffic thins, a freshly cut yard along that road holds the color right up until dark.
