Spring Green

About Spring Green

Before sunrise the Aiken Training Track is already awake — hooves on sand, breath showing in the cool, the rail fading in and out of the dark. Spring Green keeps its own early hours across town, mowing, trimming and edging while the dew is still down and the day is still generous. April is the turn of it: the dull of winter giving way, warm-season turf coming back thick, the mower finally earning its keep every single week. Clippings come off the walks, hedges are taken back where they lean over the path, and yard debris leaves with the truck. There is a particular pleasure in a lawn that greens up evenly, corner to corner.
