The Pawtuxet still runs past the old mill brick at Pontiac, and the water sounds different there than anywhere else in Warwick — steadier, older, a little cold even in August. Martins Landscaping keeps lawns in the river neighborhoods and up the streets that climb away from them, mowing on a regular turn, trimming the borders, clearing the yards out in spring and fall. Come winter the mower gives way to the plow, and the same driveways get opened, the same walkways cut down to concrete. River-valley snow can be dense and stubborn, and it does not forgive waiting. Working through a storm and stepping out at dawn to see every drive on the route dark and clear is a plain, durable pleasure.
