Out past West Kingston the pitch pine and scrub oak close in on the road, and beyond the tree line the Great Swamp lies flat and frozen. New England Land Clearing takes on snow removal in that country — plowing long rural drives, opening lots and turnarounds, blowing and shoveling walkways, treating the shaded stretches that never catch a January sun. A quarter-mile gravel drive under a foot of snow is its own kind of problem, and it wants equipment and patience more than it wants speed. Storms this far back from the shore stay snow while Wakefield turns to rain. The reward comes at the end of a pass, when the drive runs clean the whole way to the road and the woods go quiet again.
