Evening settles over Georgiaville Pond, the mill-village windows light up one at a time, and the snow usually gets serious right around suppertime. Rainone Landscaping is out in it — plowing residential drives and lots, clearing paths and front steps, sanding and salting the short steep aprons that Smithfield streets are full of. Storm work is one long night broken into small victories, one property at a time. When the plow finishes a drive there's a clean dark rectangle where an hour before there was nothing but white. Morning finds Esmond and Stillwater moving again, which is the entire point of the night.
