On Atwells Avenue the evening starts early — the pinecone arch catches the last of the light while DePasquale Square fills with the smell of somebody's dinner. B&R Landscaping and Construction works the blocks that climb away from it, the small deep yards behind Federal Hill's row houses where a lawn is measured in strides, not acres. Mowing, edging, trimming and seasonal cleanups keep those pockets tidy, and leaves get gathered before the hill's wind takes them down toward the highway. Come January the same trucks are out with plows and shovels, breaking open driveways and salting the short steep aprons that ice first. There's a particular satisfaction in a Federal Hill sidewalk cleared curb to stoop before the bakeries open.
