Early on Aquidneck Island, before the haze lifts off the Sakonnet, the mowers are already down the lane and the first stripe is laid across a Portsmouth lawn. It's About Thyme Landscape works the ground here in every register — mowing and pruning, mulch spread dark around native plantings, herb and vegetable beds turned in, and hardscape set by hand: patios, walkways, stairs, retaining walls, a fire pit built to hold an evening. There is a particular pleasure in the stonework, in a wall that sits true against a salt-hazy slope and looks as though the land had always leaned that way. Backhoe, tractor and loader do the heavy arguing with the earth; the rest is weeding, edging, plant health care and groundskeeping done slowly enough to hear what a garden is asking for. By the long shadows of a summer evening the place is simply itself again — kept, and holding.
