A retaining wall goes up along an Aquidneck slope, stone set against stone until the grade stops sliding and starts sitting still — and that is the pleasure of it, the ground finally holding its shape. Hanley Landscape Design works out of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, where the light comes in twice off the water, once from the Bay and once from the Sakonnet, and a designed landscape has to answer to salt wind as well as to the people who live in it. They design and build outdoor spaces, lay masonry and driveways, tend fine gardening and estate care, run irrigation and landscape lighting, keep lawns mowed and fed, look after the health of trees and plantings, and plow snow when the island goes white. One designer carries a project from the first sketch through construction and into the seasons after, so the beds thicken, the lighting finds the stonework at dusk, and the whole place settles in like it grew there.
