In Portsmouth the storm shows itself over the water before it ever reaches the door — a grey thickening above Mount Hope Bay, the bridge lights going soft and haloed, wind pushing up Bristol Ferry Road with salt still in it. A-1 Paving works the hours on the far side of that, the black early ones when the island is asleep under new white and the only sound is a plow blade finding pavement. Driveways come open first, then the walk to the step, then the sand and salt that keep the second half of the storm from turning to glass. There is real satisfaction in a clean square of blacktop at first light, edges squared, the pile set where it won't slide back overnight. Aquidneck winters rarely play fair, thawing at noon and freezing hard by five, and the work is built for exactly that. By the time the school buses run down East Main Road, the way out is already there.
