Newport sits where Aquidneck Island runs out of land, and the salt wind off the harbor gets into everything — the hedges leaning inland, the granite steps worn smooth, the gardens that come up thick in that damp Atlantic air. Surv Newport works those yards and the houses behind them: weeding, trimming and pruning, storm cleanup after the bay throws a night of weather at the shingles, gutters cleared, windows and siding washed back to their own color. There is a plain, physical pleasure in the after — a bed edged clean, a downspout running free, a walkway you could carry a couch down without turning sideways.
