The mulch goes down by hand, weeded and edged as they go, so a bed finishes with that clean dark line that makes a whole yard look decided; the masonry side sets stone walls, walkways, patios, front steps, and retaining walls in a town whose quarry ledges and mill-village lanes were built out of what the ground gave up. All phases of landscape — design, installation, maintenance — carry the green months, and commercial properties keep them on yearly contract straight through. Then it is winter snow removal, sanding and salting, drives and lots opened while the woods above the reservoir are still blue and unmarked.
