The work begins in the hands and the machines they steer — the hydroseed slurry laid down in a wet green wash, the mower's line held true along an old stone wall, the plow blade dropped before first light finds Putnam Pike. Northern Landscape Corporation works out of Chepachet, up in Glocester's wooded northwest corner, where the ground rolls in ledge and white pine and every good yard has to be argued out of granite. They design, build, and maintain landscapes, hydroseed bare ground into lawn, and clear snow across Rhode Island and into nearby Connecticut and Massachusetts. What they leave behind is worth slowing the truck down for: a raw slope knitted green, a wall sitting like it grew there, a drive opened clean to the pavement while the woods are still dark and the reservoir road is still one long white ribbon.
