Pathfinder builds snowplows here — coil-spring trip and polyurethane trip-edge, six and a half feet out to ten, steel and stainless, fitted to trucks that will spend the season ahead of everyone else's morning. They install, service, repair, and customize what they make, keep the parts on the shelf that hold a rig together, and set dump inserts in beds for the hauling that comes after. Storm nights the doors stay open in the dark, so a driver can limp in with a bent edge and leave able to finish the route, whether it runs the Rhode Island hills or on into Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, or New York. It is a plain and satisfying arithmetic: one shop in a quiet town, and a thousand driveways scraped clean to the gravel before anyone is awake to see it.
