Diamond Hill stands up out of northern Cumberland with its pale quartz face catching whatever light the sky has left, and the wind at the top of Route 114 arrives with nothing in its way. C.L. Outdoor Services LLC plows the drives and lots beneath that hill, where a storm reaches the ground a few degrees colder and hangs around a few hours longer than it does in the valley. Sloped driveways get opened first and treated after, snow pushed well off the road edge so a car can see before it pulls out, walkways shoveled right to the door. Up here the melt refreezes almost every night, which makes the ice work matter as much as the pushing does. When it is done properly, the hill goes on being a hill and nobody has to think about it.
