Coventry unspools westward from the old mill villages strung along the Pawtuxet River into deep woods and the long silver reach of the Flat River Reservoir, and JD's Lawn and Tree works the whole span of it. Through the warm months they keep the grass low and level, mowing dooryards in Anthony and Washington and cutting back the green tangle from lots out toward Rice City, where the forest keeps pressing at the edges. There is tree and limb work too, the kind that opens a yard back up to the light after a hard wind. When the first heavy snow buries the back roads, they are out ahead of dawn, plowing driveways clean so a place is passable before the day even begins. It is plain, honest satisfaction — a lawn that holds its line to the tree edge, a drive banked neat against the cold, the mark of hands that know this town by its seasons.
