There is a particular September light on the field walls at Colt State Park, low and warm, that makes a fresh-cut lawn look almost varnished. The Lawnmower Shop chases that look across Bristol all season, mowing in straight overlapping passes, running the fence lines, edging a walk until the seam between grass and concrete is a single stroke. Machines get respect here: a sharp blade cuts grass, a dull one tears it, and the difference shows up two days later in the color. Cleanups at either end of the season clear what autumn and winter leave behind, from packed leaves to the litter of storm-dropped twigs. It is plain work repeated well, and a town of tidy front yards is the whole reward.
