About Christopher Diehl
Central Market opens early in York, and so does the mowing season — by the third week of April the row-house strips off Market Street are green enough to need attention. Christopher Diehl works those blocks and the wider lots out where the city loosens toward Codorus Valley farmland: mowing, edging, trimming, mulch in the beds, fertilizer and weed control to keep the turf even. Summer here comes humid and thunder-prone, and grass answers by growing fast, so much of the job is simply keeping pace with it week by week. The part worth staying for is the last pass along a sidewalk, where the blade line falls straight as a chalked seam and the walk comes up clean. Then October arrives, the street maples let go all at once, and the same yards get raked, cut back and left tidy for the cold.
