Fog fills the hollows of Wilmot township most summer mornings and burns off from the ridges down, so the day up here seems to begin twice. NwallawNs mows in that country of hayfields and long gravel lanes, where a yard might sit on a knob with fifty miles of Bradford County folded out behind it. The cutting is straightforward; the ground is not — swales, stone, spring seeps, and a tree line that tries to creep in a little further every year. What comes of the work is a clearing kept honest: grass even, edges trimmed back around the porch and the shed, the lane mowed wide enough for two trucks to pass. In the Endless Mountains a tidy lawn is a small, deliberate answer to a very large landscape.
