Whitpain still wears its farm bones: fieldstone walls half swallowed by hedgerow, a barn roof showing over the rise on Morris Road, lawns that were pasture not so long ago. Tonka Lawns & Landscape works that ground twice over — mowing, trimming and mulching it green from April into October, then returning with a plow once the fields go the color of paper. Autumn is the long haul, oak leaves coming down in waves until the beds are cleared and the turf can breathe. Winter is short, sharp work: driveways opened, walks and steps shoveled, salt on the sloped apron by the road. Two kinds of work on one property, and the pleasure of knowing a place well enough in July to plow it blind in January.
