The Wissahickon threads the length of Whitemarsh, low and brown-green beneath the sycamores, and the land climbs away from it toward Militia Hill. Chad Shirey keeps lawns on that pitched ground — mowing across the slopes, trimming the awkward banks a deck can't sit on, edging drives and walks so the lines stay clean on uneven land. When winter comes into the valley the work turns to plowing and shoveling, driveways opened and walkways cleared and salted before the hill roads get busy. Fall means leaves, and Whitemarsh produces a great many of them. Whitemarsh Township, Lafayette Hill, Flourtown, Plymouth Meeting and Conshohocken.
