April in Wayne arrives underneath the oaks first — bulbs coming up through last year's mulch, birds loud at six, the grass changing color almost by the day. Greenstone Gardens starts the year there, mowing, trimming, edging and clearing the winter's litter out of beds and borders. Properties along these lanes are built around their plantings, so the lawn has to be cut in a way that frames them rather than fighting them: tight to the bed line, clean at the stone, nothing scalped where the ground rolls. Done well, the whole yard settles into place, green and quiet and intentional. That is the work, kept up from the first spring cut to the last of the leaves.
