About Pave

Waverly gets the kind of winter the Abingtons are known for — a foot overnight, then another two days later, the old village lanes narrowing between banks. Pave stays ahead of it, plowing driveways and lots, clearing walks, and putting salt down where the shade under the big hemlocks keeps a slick spot alive all week. The stone-walled drives around the village do not forgive a careless blade, so the routes get learned by heart and run the same way every storm. A driveway squared off to its true edges, with the stack pushed where it will not melt back across, is worth doing right. By breakfast, everyone in the house can get where they are going.
