Winter comes to Sparta out of the northwest, off the lake and up over the Crawford County plateau, until the farm lanes go soft-edged and every hardwood branch on the ridge is carrying white. J & T Climbing works the hours before the school buses, plowing drives and lanes and cutting a clean opening back to the road so nobody has to guess where the gravel ends. Walks are shoveled down to the concrete, and salt goes on the shaded stretches where ice hangs on past noon. A long farm drive opened at five in the morning is a small kindness that lasts the rest of the day. It is plain work, done in the dark, and it is why the morning starts on time.
