The National Pike still climbs out of Washington east and west the way it always has, Route 40 rising over one long green swell of Washington County and dropping into the next. A1 LANDSCAPING mows the yards strung along those grades in the thick of midsummer, when the heat sits heavy by ten in the morning and the mower leaves a dark stripe behind it. The work is straightforward and it shows immediately: grass cut to one clean height, trim lines tight around mailboxes and porch steps, the walk blown off so the pavement reads bright again. Out here a kept lawn is what separates a house from the field behind it. Yards from the Pike into East Washington and out along the old road get the same steady schedule.
