The Beaver River cuts a deep valley through Wampum, and winter settles into it — flurries riding in from the west, cold pooling in the hollows below the limestone hills. Valley Brook Services plows and salts through those months, opening driveways and lots along the Route 18 corridor and on the back roads that climb out of the valley. Lawrence County snow tends to be gray and persistent rather than dramatic: a few inches at a time, again and again, until the season becomes one long push. Steep drives get scraped down and treated so the second storm doesn't build on the first. By morning the pavement is clear and the valley gets on with its day.
