A nor'easter announces itself on Lansdowne Avenue hours ahead — the wind swings, the sky goes flat pewter, and Upper Darby starts pulling cars in off the street. Dougherty Contractors is loaded and staged before the first flake: plowing driveways and lots, opening walkways, salting so ice never gets a grip. Storms out of the Atlantic hit this corner of Delaware County heavy and wet, and heavy wet snow has to be moved in passes rather than all at once. The good part comes at daybreak, when a street that was buried is simply open again. Then somebody's coffee gets drunk, and the second round starts.
