Cold settles into the Susquehanna valley and stays, and a Towanda winter morning can find the whole river bend frozen still and blue. M.R. Dirt is out ahead of it, plowing drives and lots, clearing walks and entries, salting the grades that go slick in the shadow of the hillside. Storms track along Route 6 and through the Endless Mountains in bands, so the work goes in rounds, back through again as the snow keeps stacking. Windrows get pushed wide so there is room for whatever comes next. Open pavement before daylight is the whole measure of a good night.
