Scranton climbs its hillsides in tiers, and the trees climb with it — big maples and lindens rooted in narrow strips between the sidewalk and a hundred-year-old porch, with the Moosic Mountains standing over the whole valley. In November, when the wind comes off those ridges and the Lackawanna runs cold below Nay Aug, every overhanging limb in the city gets a test. D J's Tree Services works that grid of tight streets and steep back lots: pruning and trimming to lift crowns off roofs and wires, removal where a tree has outgrown a five-foot planting strip, and storm damage cleanup when a limb ends up across the pavement. Rigging over parked cars and slate roofs is unglamorous work, and the day is judged by everything that did not get touched. The street reopens, the sidewalk is swept, and the hillside canopy carries on.
