Rockwood sits down in the Casselman valley with the Laurel ridges standing over it, and both of its seasons come on strong. B&M Lawn Service mows, trims, edges, mulches and cleans up through a short mountain summer, then plows, shovels and salts through a winter that counts its snow in feet rather than inches. Somerset County storms ride the ridge and unload on the valley, drifting a lane shut twice before daylight. Opening one anyway — down to gravel, wide at the turnaround, salt on the pitch by the porch — is the sort of work that makes a morning.
