The Sod Father

About The Sod Father

October in Rockdale arrives with woodsmoke and a low sun that turns every blade of grass gold by five o'clock. The Sod Father spends that season getting lawns ready for a long country winter — a final low cut, leaves lifted off the turf before they mat down, beds edged so the lines hold until spring. Come April the work runs the other way: rake out the thatch, cut back the winter-burned growth, patch the thin places along the driveway. Between them are the long green months of weekly mowing and trimming that keep a rural property looking cared for. A lawn that comes back thick in May was tended in November, and that is the part nobody sees.
