Reading Shoveling Business

About Reading Shoveling Business

Four in the morning on a Reading brick street, the alleys still blue, and the only sound is a shovel scraping down to concrete. Reading Shoveling Business does the work a plow blade can never reach: front steps, slate walks, the narrow paths between rowhomes, the strip of sidewalk a neighbor has to cross before the sun is up. Snow in the Schuylkill valley arrives wet and heavy more often than not, and it takes hands to move it off a stoop. Driveways get opened, walkways get cleared, and salt goes down where the shade holds ice all day long. By the time Penn Street is moving, the path from the door to the car is already waiting.
