About Dreamland Outdoor Services

Up on the western slope of the Allegheny Front, Portage takes its winter early and keeps it late, in the same gap where the old inclines once hauled canal boats over the mountain. Dreamland Outdoor Services works those storms — plowing driveways, opening walks, spreading salt on the steep approaches that ice before anything else. The Little Conemaugh valley funnels the wind, so what falls up at this elevation drifts more than the depth suggests. There is a particular quiet to a four-in-the-morning run: the borough dark, the blade down, one clean lane opening behind the truck. By the time headlights start backing out for the day shift, the drives are ready for them.
