Pittsburgh has hundreds of public stairways, and in Carrick and Mt. Oliver they are how people actually get to the bus. Zalar's LLC takes on the winter version of those hillsides — shoveling steps and walks, plowing driveways off the tight side streets, salting the treads where ice forms first and stays longest. A stairway cleared tread by tread is slow going, and there is no machine that will do it for you. Snow on these slopes drifts up against retaining walls and fills in the flat spots, so a route gets rechecked while the storm is still running. What's left behind is a dark line of open pavement heading down the hill.
