Along the Monongahela the old furnace flats are green now, and the Hot Metal Bridge carries bicycles where it once carried ladle cars. Steel City Landscape, Inc. keeps the growing half of that year on the flats and up the South Side Slopes, mowing and trimming yards that sit at angles you have to lean into, then hauling off what autumn drops. When December turns, the same trucks change over to plowing driveways and lots, clearing walks and laying salt while the river runs black under the streetlights. Winter arrives here in bands sliding down off Lake Erie, and it leaves a wet, heavy inch that has to be moved before the first shift starts. The name is about weather more than anything else — work that shows up for both halves of a Pittsburgh year.
