The Salt Factory

About The Salt Factory

Before the Strip District wakes — before the produce trucks back into Penn Avenue and the awnings come down — the ice has to be off the sidewalks. The Salt Factory works that margin, spreading de-icer, plowing lots and drives, and clearing entries so the first delivery of the day doesn't go sliding. Pittsburgh's freeze-thaw is the real adversary here: a wet afternoon becomes a glazed six a.m. without a single flake falling in between. So the job is as much timing as muscle, salt laid ahead of the freeze and walks opened ahead of the crowd. The name tells you the main ingredient; the hours tell you the rest.
