About Landscape

Spring reaches the slopes below Mount Washington before it reaches anywhere shaded, and the first green shows up on the terraced yards that step down toward the river. Landscape works those tiers through the season — mowing narrow benches of lawn, trimming along wall stone and stair treads, edging the paths, hauling off the clippings that would otherwise wash down the hill. On ground like this, level is something you make, not something you find. There's craft in a small terraced yard cut so evenly it looks like it was always going to be that easy. From up on the slope you can see the rivers, and below you a lawn squared away.
