Brick sidewalks, iron fences, a garden square holding its plane trees over Queen Village and Bella Vista — greenery down here is measured in feet rather than acres, and every foot shows. We mow the small lawns, trim along the brick and the fence bases, edge until the line is clean, and sweep up behind ourselves. Detail is the job at this scale; there is nowhere for a sloppy pass to hide. In winter we shovel the walks and steps, salt the brick where it turns treacherous, and plow the drives and small lots where there is room to work. Fine-grained care for fine-grained ground.
