Herr's Homescapes

About Herr's Homescapes

By four o'clock on a December afternoon the light is already leaving the fields around New Danville, and if it happens to be snowing the farm lanes go soft-edged and blue. Herr's Homescapes works on into that dark — plowing driveways and parking areas, clearing walkways and steps by hand, salting the stretch where a boot might slip between the front door and the car. Houses in Pequea Township tend to sit well back from the road with a good run of blacktop or gravel in between, which makes an unplowed drive a genuine obstacle and a plowed one a small mercy. Storms come across from the west with little warning from the Susquehanna side. Whatever hour they finish, that is when the work begins.
