South of Palmyra the ground begins to climb toward Mount Gretna, and weather that reaches the valley floor has usually crossed those hills first. Gretna Valley Landscape follows the year in both directions: mowing and lawn upkeep from the first warm weeks onward, plowing and salting when a storm comes down off the high ground overnight. Winter here can arrive as a two-inch nuisance or as a long heavy fall that closes the valley in by breakfast, and either way the driveways have to open. Come April the same properties want cutting again, and the trucks trade blades for mowers. Two halves of one year, one set of hands, the same attention to how the finished ground looks.
