Oil City is built on grades that teach a person respect for a hill. Big Dog Landscaping runs mowers up the South Side pitches and along the flats near the Center Street bridge, cutting, string-trimming and hauling clippings off yards that tilt toward the water. In June the grass comes on fast after a warm rain and the whole town smells like it. When January drops a foot overnight, the same trucks come back with plows and shovels and salt, opening driveways that would otherwise be a toboggan run. The good part of the day is looking back at a lawn striped even from curb to porch step.
