From the DeKalb Street bridge, snow falling on the Schuylkill looks like it is disappearing — and on the roads behind it, it very much is not. D&M Lopez Landscaping runs the winter shift on both banks: driveways plowed, walks and steps shoveled, salt spread on the aprons and turns where ice likes to hide. Norristown's grid climbs away from the water, and every block up is a block more slippery, so routes get drawn by slope as much as by address. The work happens mostly in the dark — headlights, orange strobes, the long scrape of a blade. Then morning arrives and the day just starts, which is the whole idea.
